RE:                Request to Place Emergency Measure on the Agenda for the April 10, 2018 Legislative Meeting

This is to request that the following measures be placed on the agenda for the April 10, 2018 Legislative Meeting:

  • Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School Designation Emergency Declaration Resolution of 2018
  • Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School Designation Emergency Act of 2018

The purpose of the designation is to officially designate the school in Lot 822 in Square 5561, bounded by Nicholson Street, S.E., Prout Street, S.E., 22nd Street, S.E., and Minnesota Avenue, S.E., in Ward 8, as Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School.  After collaborating with students, parents, and community members, the District of Columbia Public Schools found it most fitting to re-designate Orr Elementary School as Lawrence E. Boone Elementary School.  The new designation will honor the late Mr. Lawrence E. Boone who served as principal to Orr Elementary School for 23 years and was a pillar in the Anacostia Community.

Permanent legislation to effect the official designation is scheduled for first reading on April 10, 2018.  Enacting the legislation on an emergency basis will make the official designation effective sooner than congressional review and guarantee that the school signage will be installed before the school opens in August 2018.

The draft proposed measures are attached.  Please call me or Sydney Hawthorne if you have any questions at (202) 724-7130.
