The following measures are placed on the agenda for the November 16, 2021 Legislative Meeting:

 

• John Lewis Elementary School Designation Emergency Declaration Resolution of 2021
• John Lewis Elementary School Designation Emergency Act of 2021

 

The purpose of the designation is to officially designate the school in Lot 0814 in Square 2806, at 1335 Farragut Place NW as John Lewis Elementary School.  After collaborating with students, parents, and community members, the District of Columbia Public Schools found it most fitting to re-designate West Elementary School as John Lewis Elementary School.  The new designation will honor the late Mr. John Lewis, who was a civil rights activist and who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5^th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. 

 

            Permanent legislation to effect the official designation is scheduled for second reading on November 16, 2021.  Enacting the legislation on an emergency basis will make the official designation effective sooner than congressional review.
